Academic Background My degree and integrated masters was in Chemistry and was taken at the University of Manchester. My final year project was in the Green lab where I investigated the incorporation of non-ribosomal amino acids into a rationally designed enzyme scaffold. This project gave me a love of enzymatic systems and inspired me to choose my current PhD project.

PhD Project: Computational Approaches to Enzyme Redesign
In this project, I will be applying the quantum mechanics/ molecular mechanics (QM/MM) hybrid computational method to:
-
Investigate the chemical mechanisms of several enzymatic reactions.

-
Predict 'hot-spots' in enzyme active sites where amino-acid mutations may provide beneficial effects (rate, binding energy, enzyme stability etc).

-
Suggest specific amino-acid substitutions that could provide these beneficial effects.
